Trevor Ewert from Bushies Bakery in Glengarry has been recognised for his efforts in raising funds for the 2016 Good Friday Appeal, and has been named Latrobe City Council’s Citizen of the Year. Emily Beecroft, a Rio Paralympian, was awarded Young Citizen of the Year.

At the Australia Day Awards Ceremony at Kernot Hall, Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the nominees and winners highlighted the spirit of Latrobe City.

"Trevor Ewert raised more than $30,000 for the Good Friday Appeal from the sale of hot cross buns from his bakery in Glengarry. The flavoured hot cross buns became a social media phenomenon, bringing people from around the state to Glengarry and putting the township, and the wider region, on the map for many visitors.

"Emily Beecroft, a member of the Traralgon Swim Club, represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, competing in four events. She achieved personal best times in all four events and was a finalist in the 100m fly, 100m free and 50m free. Emily finished sixth in both 100m events and fourth in the freestyle, just .03 sec from third and a bronze medal," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"The Community Event of the Year was awarded to the Latrobe Valley Community Choir’s Street Requiem which united 200 singers and performers of all abilities, ages and backgrounds to sing for more than 2000 people at the Victory Park sound shell.

"The 2017 Community Service of the Year award went to the 20 th Anniversary of the International Women’s Group which now has 140 members from 24 cultural backgrounds. The group organises festivals, events, seminars and legal information days and has served the CALD community since 1996," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Congratulations to the winners and to the nominees for each category. This year the quality of nominations was heartfelt, testament not just to the fact that Latrobe City has many community-focused individuals and groups, but also to the fact that people are now more willing to recognise those individuals and groups.

"We have many unsung heroes in our midst, but being able to celebrate them is a special privilege," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
