Foreshore and Bushland Reserves.

Bass Coast Shire Council Coast and Bushland Coordinator, Derek Hibbert, said it was important to preserve these areas so the entire community could enjoy them.

"The Silverleaves Foreshore and many of our other reserves are places we preserve for coastline conservation and the benefit of the community," said Mr Hibbert.

"This includes the protection of our indigenous vegetation and fauna.

"Council adopted the Foreshore Encroachment program in June this year. We are pleased to begin the program by replanting these areas of land that were being used exclusively for private use," said Mr Hibbert.

The work included removing lawn planted by landowners on Silverleaves Foreshore and replacing it with coastal vegetation. Before the planting, contractors sprayed the lawn with herbicide and spread mulch on the area.

Mr Hibbert said Council will continue the works program in the coming year to address more lawn extensions and other forms of encroachment.

"This will include removing unauthorised plants, buildings and stored items and closing informal access tracks," confirmed Mr Hibbert.
"Areas that have already been identified as "hot spots" include foreshore and bushland reserves in Cowes, Silverleaves, Ventnor, Grantville and Coronet Bay.

"We encourage any private landowner who is encroaching on a Council reserve to stop mowing or planting and remove any personal items or buildings from these areas," continued Mr Hibbert.

Information on Council’s program of encroachment removal is contained in Encroachment into Foreshore and Bushland Reserves: A Procedure for Action, 1 June 2011 (PDF 877kb).

Council is calling on the community to report any known cases of encroachment. This information will be used to develop a register of sites. Council’s Coast and Bushland Coordinator can be contacted on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
