This historic building, dating back to 1889, is an indispensable facility for Stratford and the surrounding district and has just undergone some $320,000 of improvements.

Work has included a substantial extension, which complements the original design and architecture of the hall. There is a new foyer and forecourt incorporating disabled access, a much improved servery and supper area, and new toilet amenities. The inside and outside of the building have also been extensively redecorated.

The Victorian Government provided a Small Towns Development Fund grant of $129,500 to the project, with over $135,000 coming from Wellington Shire Council and over $50,000 raised by the local community.

At 3.00pm on 10 December Minister Brumby will unveil a plaque to officially open the revamped facilities. Amongst those attending the ceremony will be: Wellington’s Mayor, and CEO Lyndon Webb; Craig Ingram, State Member for Gippsland East; and members of the Stratford Mechanics Hall Committee of Management.

Said Mayor Jeff Amos: "We are delighted that Mr Brumby is able to perform the official opening of this fantastic new-look facility, with the work made possible thanks to a very productive and cooperative partnership involving the State Government, the local community and the council.

"This is a great example of how a community and governments can pull together effectively to achieve a common goal."

Minister Brumby’s visit to Wellington on 10 December will also see him officially opening Stage 1 of the Port of Sale redevelopment and the new Heyfield Hub community complex – a major $800,000 upgrade to Heyfield Library and public hall, which includes provision of a new Rural Transaction Centre.
