Help Have a Trouble-Free Summer

Bass Coast Shire Council and Victoria Police will be working with the local community over the festive season to encourage a safe environment for all to enjoy

Bass Coast Shire Council and Victoria Police will be working with the local community over the festive season to encourage a safe environment for all to enjoy.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to call the local laws hotline over the festive season to report breaches of local laws. The number is 0419 740 042 and is a direct line to Council’s local laws officers.

"Local laws officers are particularly concerned about illegal camping and drinking in the streets during the summer holidays," said Kaye Hall, Senior Local Laws Officer at Council. "We want to ensure everyone can celebrate safely in Bass Coast."

Kaye explained that camping on public or private land without a permit is a breach of local laws in Bass Coast Shire Council and may result in a fine.

"This includes sleeping in vehicles," said Kaye. "Local residents will notice that some parking signs in local streets have been changed recently to include no standing between 12.30am and 8am."

Kaye explained the change of signage is to discourage people sleeping in their vehicles in and around the retail and residential areas. Local laws officers have been delivering parking permits to local people who maybe be affected by the signage.

"If we have missed anyone they are still able to pick up a permit at the Cowes Customer Service Office or by contacting us on the hotline number," said Kaye.

Consuming alcohol is only allowed in designated areas to discourage anti-social behaviour in public areas.

"Victoria Police and Council will be working together to stop people drinking alcohol in the streets," said Kaye. "People can be fined for this offence by police and local laws officers."

"Council and Victoria Police are keen to ensure residents and visitors can enjoy Bass Coast this summer," said Kaye.
