Come Together To Help Make Gippsland Stronger

Participate in the Regional Business Development Analysis

By Emma Kae - 28th July 2002 - Back to News

The time has come to make an action plan for building a solid and sustainable economic base for regional Australia. The Federal Government has appointed an independent panel to assess the current situation of economics in non-metropolitan Australia and create working concepts that will benefit our future prosperity.

This panel is seeking the involvement of people interested in the future of Gippsland to improve regional business by participating in the project. The unique perspective of Gippsland businesses and organisations living their lives in regional Australia may offer "out-of-the-square" ideas for improving equal opportunity for all Australians to prosper.

In order to write an action plan that accurately represents both the current economic situation in regional Australia and the potential for areas such as Gippsland to increase their prosperity, the panel needs input from the community. The ‘Questions Paper’ (downloadable from the website) provides an opportunity for everyone to have say and work toward a stronger economy.

The paper includes a series of questions and outlines the reasons for the Analysis.  The questions within the paper are strictly a guide to the kind of information the panel is seeking – you may choose to answer as many or as little as you like and feel free to mention any area of concern to you regardless of whether or not it has been covered in the questions. Every input and contribution is both valued and appreciated.

Contributions must be received by 23 August 2002 and you can forward your paper to the Gippsland Portal for inclusion in a collective from the Gippsland ACC if you wish. Go to the Regional Business Development Analysis website to download the survey or complete the paper online. http://www.rbda.gov.au/consultation/questions.htm

Gippsland ACC will be hosting members of the panel on a visit to

Gippsland in October.  Further details about the visit, and the Regional Business Development Analysis project can be obtained by contacting Maree McPherson, Executive Director Gippsland ACC on 5175 0600.

The following is an excerpt from the questions paper:

Your submission should consider a range of factors that can influence the business operating environment, such as:

Economic prosperity

Hard infrastructure such as transport, power supply, waste management, telecommunications (including Internet access and mobile phone coverage)

Capital formation through investment and access to finance, and emerging industries

Technology, particularly with respect to emerging industries, also Internet usage (how the Internet can be used, as opposed to access) and e-commerce, innovation, research and development

Real estate appreciation

Labour market conditions and access to employment services

Social cohesion

Soft Infrastructure, such as access to medical services and schooling (including further  education and training), recreational opportunities, public liability considerations

Environmental

Biodiversity, climate, pollution, water supply, salinity, property rights

Governance

Governance relates to the extent to which local authorities are aware of local concerns and take responsibility for the delivery of local services and for significant strands of economic development, particularly in relation to infrastructure and business development and planning.
