Visitors to last year’s event were treated to days of fantastic racing and nail-biting finishes. This year is set to be even better with the new category - Superbikes. Another new initiative is the speed comparison event between three different classes of motorcycle ridden by former world champions. Eight superscreens around the track will also enhance the experience for race-goers.
"There’s plenty for race-goers to do both on and off the track," said Cr Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "Council has worked with the community and Grand Prix officials to put together activities and facilities in Cowes and throughout the Island that will ensure a fun and safe weekend for all."
Socialising with other Grand Prix fans is all part of the experience and licensed areas in Cowes will allow race-goers to have a chat about the day’s events over a beer. The areas will be managed in accordance with all the conditions of the Liquor Licensing Act. There will also be a superscreen with highlights of the day’s events plus live bands to entertain race-goers when they’re not at the track.
"To ensure everyone can enjoy themselves in a safe environment, our community protection staff will be patrolling and enforcing local laws over the weekend," said Cr Sage. "They will be working to ensure that visitors understand and obey local laws such as bans on sleeping in vehicles and drinking in public places."
It is expected that many visitors will travel to the Grand Prix by motorcycle as they join Wayne Gardner on his trip from Woolongong to Phillip Island.
