Pulling Out All The Stops To Tackle Flood Emergencies

East Gippsland Water staff have been working round the clock, responding to emergencies associated with the impact of floods on water and wastewater services across the region.

By East Gippsland Water - 2nd July 2007 - Back to News

The priority has been to protect Authority infrastructure such as pumping stations and water treatment works, to ensure no contamination of drinking water supplies from floodwaters sweeping through communities in the region.

Since the morning of 27 June, when the heavy rains started, staff have handled numerous calls from customers, most in relation to burst water mains caused by floodwater surges and ground movement. Towns and surrounding areas worst affected have included Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Lindenow and Lakes Entrance.

Customers in Lindenow and Lindenow South are now relying on trucked-in drinking water after supplies were temporarily disrupted by a broken water main. They are being encouraged to use water sparingly until the main, currently submerged under floodwater, can repaired. This will be carried out as quickly as possible.

There have also been a few incidents reported of wastewater pipes overflowing, though any overflow has been heavily diluted by the floodwaters.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Chief Executive Officer, Les Mathieson: "There’s no doubt this is a tough time for everyone in East Gippsland. Our staff continue to work tirelessly to deal with customer emergencies and are also checking, protecting and repairing any damaged East Gippsland water infrastructure.

"The major flooding over the last couple of days has brought a temporary halt to drinking water production from the Mitchell River, with our treatment operation at Woodglen Reservoir temporarily shut down for safety reasons. This has freed up additional staff to respond to flood-related emergency calls across the region.

" We are looking to get the operation at Woodglen up and running again as soon as possible, but it’s encouraging to report water levels in the Mitchell River storages remain steady at around 37% full."

The 24 hour emergency number for East Gippsland Water customers to call to report a fault with their water supply is 1300 134 202. For other enquiries, please phone 1300 720 700.
