Yarram Drainage Planning

Wellington Shire Council has appointed a contractor to develop plans for the Yarram Drainage Study.

By Wellington Shire Council - 28th March 2006 - Back to News

The study will recommend a revamped stormwater drainage system for the township.

"Yarram lies on the flat coastal plain which has made drainage very difficult," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"This has provided challenges for over 100 years.

"As a result development has been constrained because of intermittent flooding which follows heavy rain," said Cr Hole.

"Our goal is to develop plans for an upgraded drainage system that will properly drain stormwater away from current and potential residential and business areas.

"An effective plan will be a major step towards additional development on land in and around the town," said Cr Hole.

The expansion of Yarram has in the past been limited by the inability of developers to obtain adequately drained land. The Drainage Study will identify the appropriate works needed when developing new projects.

The Drainage Study contract has been awarded to consultants Grogan Richards Pty Ltd. It will provide for both surface and underground stormwater drainage. Proposals will include provision for outfall drainage and storage basins to temporarily contain storm run-off. The study area effectively includes all land in the township which is not zoned ‘rural’.

The contractor is required to investigate the historical pattern of flooding in the town from rainfall of varying intensity. The contractor will then prepare concept designs including plans, maps and cost estimates for the project. Primary emphasis will be on developing suitable underground drainage.

The study is due to be completed within five months.

"The outcome of this study will be to provide Council with plans for a long term solution to drainage issues in Yarram," said Cr Hole.

"It will still be a while before any works on the ground can start."

"But we will fully understand what needs to be achieved and finally have a good idea of what it will cost," said Cr Hole.

"Once we have these plans we will be in a position to prioritise the works involved and determine the most appropriate funding methods."
