and Central Gippsland Cricket Association (CGCA) with competition commencing next Tuesday, 14 November at 5pm.

Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price said that both cricket associations would run individual round robin competitions, with the winner from each association competing in a final on Sunday March 4 2007.

"The winner will take home a first prize of $1000 and the runner-up, $500," Cr Price announced.

"The Latrobe City 20/20 Cup competition is aiming to capitalise on the latest cricket concept which is sweeping the world and also on the excitement being created by the arrival of the English team for this year’s Ashes series," Cr Price explained.

"There is no doubting the popularity of cricket in Australia at the moment and whilst everyone is excited about this summer’s Ashes series, we are still anxious to provide support to the sport at the grassroots level," Cr Price added.

Latrobe City’s general manager city marketing and development, Peter Quigley said that the fast-paced, shorter structure of 20/20 competition will allow games to be played on weekdays, in the late afternoon, early evening.

"We hope that both the competitive nature and high-energy style of cricket that 20/20 brings will draw a good attendance by sports fans, families and those who want to relax on a summer’s evening after work," Mr Quigley said.

"It is important that all clubs in the municipality have the opportunity to participate and Latrobe City looks forward to the spirit of competition that will be generated through the series which will no doubt result in some great games for the community to enjoy.

"Both the TDCA and CGCA have worked cooperatively on implementing a competition for the benefit of their clubs. Latrobe City hopes that the example set by these two rival associations will foster similar community spirit among other sporting groups," Mr Quigley said.

"Latrobe City is confident that those teams fortunate to win this competition will put the prize money to good use for the benefit of their players and communities," Mr Quigley concluded.
