Firewood collection reminder

Wellington Shire Council is urging residents to comply with council guidelines when collecting firewood this winter to avoid damaging our native bush and a potential fine.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st April 2004 - Back to News

Residents are reminded that a permit is required from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to collect firewood at all times, except on private property, and it can only be taken from designated domestic supply areas - outlined by DSE.

Selling and distributing firewood collected from privately owned land and the collection of firewood from roadsides throughout the shire is also prohibited unless authorised by the council or DSE. Those caught collecting firewood without a permit from an undesignated area could incur a fine.

When removing dead trees and logs, collectors are also encouraged to leave enough behind to provide natural habitats for birds and animals.

Said Wellington Mayor Jeff Amos: "It is essential that the council and community works together to protect our local environment. These guidelines are in place to prevent the degeneration of our native vegetation and wildlife, and ensure that we preserve our shire for years to come."
