Fun for all at the Gippsland Sustainable Schools Expo

500 primary students, teachers and volunteers came together to celebrate and learn about sustainability and the environment at the fourth Gippsland Sustainable Schools Expo.

Almost 500 primary students, teachers and volunteers came together on Thursday, 3 May to celebrate and learn about sustainability and the environment at the fourth Gippsland Sustainable Schools Expo, held at the Inverloch Community Hub.

The expo is an annual event developed by the Gippsland Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) and this year was hosted by Bass Coast Shire Council.

The day involved 19 educational and fun workshops designed to engage young people with the challenges we face today and providing them with solutions and ways to practice a sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, explained that this year’s theme ‘waste not, want not – living better with less’ encapsulates perfectly Council’s desire to reduce our footprint and protect our precious environment.

"As a Council we are extremely conscious of our waste and strive to improve our sustainability," Cr Rothfield said.

"One of the key themes of our Council Plan is Environment, where we pledge to maintain and protect our natural environment."

"Our introduction of the Organics bin in September 2017 is a great example of this. So far the three bin system has helped to divert around 78% of our household waste from landfill, reducing the harmful greenhouse gases and increasing the longevity of our landfill cell."

The expo was facilitated by the RCE in partnership with Bass Coast Shire Council, Sustainability Victoria’s Resource Smart Schools Program, Gippsland Waste and Resource Recovery Group, Baw Baw Shire Council, Latrobe City Council and Wellington Shire Council.

"There was significant community input in making this event successful and fun for the students," Cr Rothfield said.

"I’d like to particularly acknowledge and thank the many volunteers who helped run the workshops and the local traders who donated fruit and materials for the workshops: Coles Wonthaggi, Woolworths Wonthaggi, IGA San Remo, Food Works Inverloch and Bunnings Wonthaggi."
