Latrobe City Council has received advice from the Victorian Department of Health for consumers to avoid eating semi-dried tomatoes unless they are thoroughly cooked.

The advice follows notification that several people have been diagnosed with Hepatitis A last week in Victoria.

Latrobe City Council’s health services coordinator, Andrew Mackintosh, said Hepatitis A is spread when traces of faecal matter containing the virus contaminates hands, objects, water or food is then taken in by mouth.

"Symptoms of Hepatitis A include abdominal pain, nausea, fever and chills and jaundice. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact their local doctor," he explained.

"Semi-dried tomatoes are widely available in supermarkets, independent deli’s, cafes and is also used in restaurants in many foods, including salads and sandwiches.

"People who may have semi-dried tomatoes at home should not eat them unless they are thoroughly cooked, such as on cooked pizza’s, in well-cooked pasta sauces and in casseroles. All restaurants and cafes should also follow this advice."

Mr Mackintosh said cooking the semi-dried tomatoes well will destroy any potential Hepatitis A virus that may be present in the raw product.

The Department of Health Victoria is currently working with the Victorian manufacturers of the product to try and identify the source of contamination.
