Council Call For One Minute’s Silence On Remembrance Day

Latrobe City has endorsed calls from the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, The Hon Alan Griffith to encourage observance of Remembrance Day across the community, with a minute’s silence at 11am on Tuesday 11 November.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that Tuesday 11 November 2008 marks the ninetieth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, ending four years of conflict in the First World War.

At 11am on 11 November 1918 the guns fell silent on the Western Front. There were an estimated 40 million casualties in that war and nearly 20 million deaths were recorded. Almost 62,000 Australians were killed in battle and over 150,000 wounded; a large toll for a nation that at the time had a total population of only around 4.5 million.

"Sadly, there are no longer any ‘diggers’ who saw action on the Western Front still alive. However, there are plenty of people in our community who still remember their parents or grandparents as among those who fought for their country, some of whom died; and still honour their memory today," Mr Buckley said.

"While World War One was termed ‘the war to end all wars’, the reality was far from the rhetoric. As such, we remember on Remembrance Day all Australia’s servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars conflicts and peace operations.

"The names of the fallen are inscribed on numerous memorials across our municipality. The number of names embedded in plinths and cenotaphs in some small rural communities often reflect a sacrifice above and beyond what might be anticipated from a small population at the time, echoing the very real loss that must have been felt by all who lived there.

"Council service centres and offices will honour the call for one minutes silence; and in endorsing the Minister’s request, we urge businesses and organisations across Latrobe to similarly reflect on the service and sacrifice of Australia’s veterans who secured our nation’s freedom and peace," Mr Buckley said.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs has produced two display posters for Remembrance Day this year under the Australian Government’s commemorations program ‘Saluting Their Service’. This year’s posters commemorate the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. They portray the contrasting emotions of jubilation and grief at the end of the war.

The posters are available from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, 10 George Street Morwell.
