Storm Damage At Beaches

Bass Coast Shire Council officers have met with Department of Sustainability and Environment staff to assess damage at beaches caused by recent high tide and storms.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th May 2009 - Back to News

Council Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said Council funds and government grants would be used to fund works to repair the damage.

"The damage occurred at beaches across the Shire when we experienced a high tide of over 1.5 metres coupled with strong to gale force winds creating large swells," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"This resulted in erosion and flooding problems along the coastline.

"There was unusual flooding in low lying areas like Coronet Bay, Inverloch, San Remo and Rhyll. We expect there are more areas that have been affected that haven’t yet been identified," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

Works after storms focus primarily on repairing community facilities and minimising risks to the public with open sand dune areas often left to regenerate naturally.

"These types of storms occur regularly, however the amount of coastal damage depends on the climate conditions aligning, which they did on 25 and 26 April.

"Council carries out maintenance and repair works each year. The amount of expenditure depends on the extent of the storms, type of storm and the actual location of the damage," continued Ms Duncan-Jones.

Council is planning for the future and will host a workshop in June to provide data on climate change predictions. An outcome of the forum will be establishing how to respond to predicted climate change events and storms that may occur in the future.

"As we are likely to experience more storms and events like this due to climate change, the agencies involved such as Council, the CFA, SES, Parks Victoria and Phillip Island Nature Parks, need to work together and decide how to respond and which agency is responsible in each situation," concluded Ms Duncan-Jones.
