The Co-convenor of the Gippsland Local Government Network and CEO of Wellington Shire Council, Mr Lyndon Webb, said he welcomed the appointment: "Tourism in Gippsland has enormous potential. One of the best aspects of this new arrangement is that it will bring all of Gippsland’s Councils together with local tourism operators into an active partnership arrangement with Tourism Victoria."

As General Manager, Gippsland Tourism, Mr Buckingham will play a key role in developing tourism and investment opportunities in Gippsland over the next three years.

The Gippsland Local Government Network joined forces with Tourism Victoria to provide additional funding for the position which will focus on six key outcomes:

- Increasing the levels of employment opportunities across the tourism sector

- Increasing community awareness of the value of tourism to Gippsland

- Increasing investment opportunities particularly major infrastructure that can help to reposition Gippsland as a premier tourism destination

- Increasing operator participation in co-operative marketing opportunities

- Enhancing the visitor experience with regards to additional experiences on offer and also enhancing the levels of customer service

- Building the brand awareness of Gippsland in a very competitive market place.

Mr Buckingham said: ‘I am really looking forward to working in partnership with people across Gippsland to help strengthen and grow the tourism industry. Tourism has the potential to deliver increased employment opportunities and economic growth for the region.’

Mr Webb observed: "Chris Buckingham has a proven track record in business and community development. He is known for leading and supporting regional initiatives that have benefits for the whole of Gippsland.’

He continued: ‘Mr Buckingham will work with Local Government and the tourism sector to support the sustainable development of tourism in the region. He will also liaise with key industry and government stakeholders, including Tourism Victoria and Parks Victoria.’

Mr Buckingham responded: ‘Gippsland’s Tourism sector has the potential for significant growth. As a region we offer a range of authentic experiences at a time when people are seeking something different. ‘

He added: ‘There are some great tourism operators in the region and a number of communities who are really committed to building tourism in their area. If we can build a regional approach, we will all benefit.’

The latest International Visitors Survey found Gippsland had the third highest number of international visitors to Victoria in the year ending June 2005 (57,000 visitors), behind only Melbourne (1.3 million visitors) and the Great Ocean Road (172,000 visitors).

Mr Buckingham concluded: ‘Gippsland’s tourism sector will grow if we work together. The Gippsland Local Government Network and Tourism Victoria recognise that Tourism has the capacity to deliver significant economic benefits to the region. I plan to work in partnership with Business, Community and Government to support the region’s development.’
