Tyers and surrounding towns benefit from Gippsland Water's first membrane filtration plant

Work has begun at the Tyers Water Treatment Plant to deliver Gippsland Water’s first membrane filtration plant.

By Gippsland Water - 23rd February 2006 - Back to News

The construction of the Membrane Filtration Plant is just one of the projects comprising the $5.5 million Tyers Water Supply System upgrade, which will ensure security of supply and increase water quality to meet new regulatory standards.

The Tyers Water Supply System sources its raw water from Moondarra and currently supplies the townships of Tyers, Rosedale and Glengarry. The nearby townships of Toongabbie and Cowwarr are serviced by the Cowwarr Weir which is chlorinated locally.

The system upgrade will see Toongabbie and Cowwarr connected to the Tyers Water Supply System, giving customers in these towns access to treated water for the first time.

The upgrade requires expansion of the Tyers Water Treatment Plant, a pipeline extension from Glengarry to Toongabbie, and a pump station to service the recently constructed water storage tank at Toongabbie to cater for peak summer demand.

"The Tyers Water Supply System has struggled to cope with demand, particularly during summer. By upgrading the treatment capacity and cross connecting the two neighbouring systems, Gippsland Water will be able to increase the capacity of the system and better service customers," said Gippsland Water Chief Executive Officer, John Mitchell.

The connecting pipeline, treated water storage tank and pump station are already complete, and the Tyers Water Treatment Plant upgrade is now underway.

"Increasing the Tyers Water Treatment Plant’s capacity by an additional three megalitres per day will ensure immediate supply problems are solved, provide scope for system expansion and accommodate future growth," said Mr Mitchell.

The completed Tyers Water Treatment Plant will provide a unique environment for the operator, housing two separate treatment processes comprising three separate treatment technologies.

Existing media filtration treatment, where water flows through a number of sand filters of different grades, will be augmented by dissolved air floation filtration (DAFF) and membrane technologies in the new plant.

Membrane filtration technology is a method of water treatment that is new to Gippsland Water but over recent years has become a cost effective method of delivering high quality water. The augmented plant will provide significantly improved barriers against pathogens and will better manage water quality during poor raw water events.

"What this means for the larger number of customers who can be serviced from the expanded water treatment plant, is a greater security of supply and improved water quality," said Mr Mitchell.

Construction at the Water Treatment Plant is due for completion in June, with commissioning expected by December 2006.
