Tarraville Bridge completed ahead of schedule

Wellington Shire Council has announced that the Tarraville Bridge on Tannery Road is now open to traffic.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th April 2006 - Back to News

"This is another big step in the Council’s bridge construction", said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"The completion of this bridge is the latest part of a Council program to replace 27 wooden bridges within the Shire over four years at a cost of $7 million.

"We are a massive Shire with over 3,000km of Council roads and more than 80 timber bridges. It is a demanding task and a big cost to keep this length of road maintained and replace the aging timber bridges," said Cr Hole.

The work on the Tarraville Bridge entailed a complete replacement of the old timber bridge and included a full concrete deck, piles and abutments.

The new bridge is larger than the previous timber structure with a double lane clear width of 7.8m and is 41m long.

"It is extra pleasing that the good progress of the contractors has meant that the bridge has been completed three weeks ahead of schedule, allowing it to be open in time for the extra traffic generated by the Easter break and the Tarra Festival.

"Both locals and visitors will benefit from the new bridge," said Cr Hole.

The bridge has been constructed by contractors Jarvis Norwood Construction Pty Ltd, a Gippsland business based in Swan Reach.

The bridge was completed and opened to traffic on Thursday 6 April, well ahead of the scheduled completion date of 28 April.
