Walking School Bus Project for Baw Baw

Baw Baw Shire Council has been successful in obtaining funding from VicHealth to implement the Walking School Bus Program across eight schools in the municipality.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 28th July 2004 - Back to News

The Walking School Bus Program occurs when primary school aged children walk to and from school in small, supervised groups on a regular basis.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor, Cr Ruth McDonald, said that the Walking School Bus has considerable community benefits through creating a healthy environment for children to walk to and from school, educating parents and children about road safety and giving the benefits of regular physical activity.

"The funding will be used to employ a part-time project officer for a two year period, which will be advertised shortly," Cr. McDonald explained.

"Council, in partnership with the participating primary schools will be responsible for recruiting parent volunteers to participate in the Walking School Bus Program. The volunteers will be registered under council’s volunteer program and be subject to a police check and receive training in road safety and pedestrian safety. "

Cr McDonald said that eight primary schools have displayed an expression of interest to be involved in the Baw Baw Walking School Bus Program, being Drouin, Longwarry, Neerim South, St. Joseph’s in Warragul and Trafalgar, Warragul, Warragul North and Yarragon Primary Schools.

"The Walking School Bus Program will also enhance council’s partnerships between local schools, Gippsport, VicRoads and Victoria Police whilst keeping in line with the key directions of council," Cr McDonald concluded.
