Latrobe Valley Village is creating seven self-contained worker units, boosting affordable housing for international health and aged care professionals through the Regional Worker Accommodation Fund
Housing for workers
Work is well underway to retrofit an unused wing of Latrobe Valley Village's residential aged care building into seven new self-contained units for workers. The units will be finished by the end of the year, providing housing for international workers and filling a vital gap in skilled health and aged care roles.
Centrally located and close to public transport, the new housing will feature shared living spaces to help workers to feel part of the broader community and support a long-term move to the region. Latrobe Valley Village is a trusted retirement and aged care services organisation with a residential aged care facility in Newborough and retirement village in Moe, offering a range of affordable living units.
Investing in Latrobe Valley
Through round one of the Regional Worker Accommodation Fund, the Labor government is supporting 12 healthcare accommodation projects across the state including in Bairnsdale, Wonthaggi and Omeo. The government is also supporting the Latrobe Valley with $5 million in funding for activities being led by Latrobe City Council through the Council Support Package.
Activities include sporting and streetscape upgrades, new community and volunteer programs and more support for Aboriginal-owned businesses. The investments are part of the Labor government's record investment of more than $47 billion in just over a decade to help make rural and regional Victoria an even better place to live, work, stay and play.
Supporting essential workers
Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes said, "Providing in-demand and affordable living spaces for vital workers and their families will mean that we can continue to offer exceptional and conveniently located care to those who need it."
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "We're proud to support Latrobe Valley Village with these new homes which will support the placement and training of health and aged care workers, who will enrich the lives of older residents and strengthen the local workforce."
Latrobe Valley Village Chief Executive Officer Alison Skeldon said, "This new accommodation will make a real difference to our workforce and residents - providing our new team members a place to call home and supporting the personalised care and connection we provide to our residents."
