Wellington Council warns of illegal building dangers

Wellington Shire Council has joined forces with Archicentre* and Victoria ’s Municipal Building Surveyors in a campaign to warn residents of the dangers of undertaking illegal building on their properties.

The Do it Right community awareness program emphasises the importance of following planning and building regulations to avoid creating safety, legal and financial hazards.

Illegal building work – including the use of unregistered plumbers and electricians – can devalue your property and lead to legal complications when the time comes to sell. It inflates costs to the community, with council resources being used to detect the illegal structures and to take enforcement action to have such work modified or pulled down.

A free Do it Right information brochure can be downloaded from Archicentre’s website at www.archicentre.com.au.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "The safety of our residents is paramount. It’s important people understand we are not just talking about illegal building in relation to construction, but also illegally installed wiring and gas hot water services for example. We strongly urge any resident contemplating cost-cutting building activities to seriously reconsider their position given the potentially dangerous consequences."

Anyone who would like more information can contact Wellington’s Principal Building Surveyor Barry Nicholl on 1300 366 244.

*Archicentre is the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
