Preps learn first hand about civics from CouncilOn a recent visit to Latrobe City’s municipal offices in Traralgon, Prep S and Prep B from Kosciusko Street School, received a lesson on civics and government first hand By Latrobe City Council - 11th July 2001 - Back to News On a recent visit to Latrobe City’s municipal offices in Traralgon, Prep S and Prep B from Kosciusko Street School, received a lesson on civics and government first hand, from one of the municipalities most experienced local government politicians.
While very young, and only knowing a little about the role of our Federal and State governments and Council, the enthusiastic students were soon having their questions answered by none other than the Mayor, Cr Brendan Jenkins, himself.
Cr Jenkins said the visit to the Council Chamber was a good way for the prep students to see first hand how the Council agenda was discussed and how decisions that affect the community are made.
"Some of the children sat in the seats where the Councillors sit at meetings, while others sat in the Gallery. I asked them some questions to find out what they knew about government in general, and they were able to ask me questions," Cr Jenkins said.
"It is very important that children are given the opportunity at school to find out about the differences between Federal, State and local governments and what each tier of government does. It is a good grounding to engender a sense of debate and concepts of democracy and responsibility.
"Council encourages our young people to take an interest in government. Latrobe has its own Youth Council, and our young people provide us with a valuable insight into their own needs and aspirations brought about by discussions among themselves. We hope that when these children grow up they will take an active interest in the affairs of the country, State and municipality, and will cherish their right to vote and look forward to accepting their responsibilities as citizens, Cr Jenkins said.
"While these children were a little young to have a great knowledge of the workings of governments, I’m sure they went away the wiser for their visit and will perhaps put concepts of debate and discussion into their own activities at school," Cr Jenkins concluded.
