Gippsland Fires: Elvis The Aircrane Returns

A fresh strike team is sent into the area as part of the ongoing battle against fire in the Park

By DSE/CFA - 13th February 2003 - Back to News

After proving so popular on his last visit, Elvis the Aircrane returned yesterday, by popular demand, to Gippsland to help prevent the fire in the Snowy River National Park crossing the River near Gelantipy.

A fresh strike team was also sent into the area as part of the ongoing battle against fire in the Park.

Visibility yesterday was the best it has been for some time. All aircraft were deployed to various sectors of the main fire, including a CFA managed fire, which started late yesterday afternoon between Traralgon and Morwell and has since been contained after burning around 900 hectares.

Overnight across Gippsland the main priorities were monitoring the fires, strengthening control lines and backburning.

Spot-overs were reported in several areas near Cobungra, west of Mount Hopeless, Bindi and south of the Phipps Track, near Livingstone.

Further east a significant backburn was completed at Amboyne while backburning continued in the Staircase, Yalmy, Moonkan and Deddick Junction areas.

The Mt Ellery fire near Goongerah (East Gippsland), in the Big River Reference Area started last Friday and has so far burnt an area of fifteen hectares. This fire remains active and work continued yesterday to contain it.

Today’s weather is expected to be mild in the south with local morning drizzle. Warm to very warm with the chance of local thundery showers later in the far east. Winds will tend S/SE. However, the weekend is tipped to make firefighting more difficult with conditions forecast to be warm and dry with winds tending N/NE and isolated thunderstorms possible with a strong change expected later on Sunday.
