South Gippsland Council adopts 2023/24 budget prioritising community, roads and growth initiatives for regional development
South Gippsland Shire Council adopted the 2023/24 Budget, focusing on community needs, capital works, and key initiatives, including road maintenance, planning support, community plans, and capital projects.
At its June Council Meeting, South Gippsland Shire Council adopted the 2023/24 Budget and Long-Term Financial Plan. The Annual Budget carefully balances the needs of our local community with the delivery of services.
The adopted budget serves as a pivotal strategic blueprint detailing the services and projects South Gippsland Council will deliver to the community and the necessary resources for 2023/24
Capital works and key initiatives
Investment in capital works and key initiatives including but not limited to:
- $400,000 towards council's annual re-sheet program, design of sealing priority roads and protecting the condition of our roads through roadside vegetation and weed management
- $155,000 towards Planning initiatives to support sustainable growth in South Gippsland, including implementing actions from the Coastal Strategy, South Gippsland Planning Scheme Review and progressing planning controls in Nyora
- Assisting the community with the development of Community Plans across our unique communities and ongoing funding support for the Live4Life program
Council capital projects
The budget also mentioned a raft of Capital Works projects such as:
- Revitalised Korumburra streetscape
- Refurbishment of the rail precincts in Leongatha and Korumburra into new community areas
- Revitalised Venus Bay streetscape
- Rehabilitation and resealing of sealed road sections
- Preparation of a strategic business plan for Coal Creek Community Park and Museum, in partnership with our community

Local government challenges
Cr Nathan Hersey, Mayor South Gippsland Shire Council said, "Local government faces many challenges, particularly in regional areas, having to deliver more with less and the effects of inflation flowing through."
"It is more important than ever for council to be in a financially strong position to absorb as much as possible unexpected costs as possible. This Budget maintains our sound financial position while also delivering and progressing outcomes that are important to our community," Cr Hersey said.
