In perfect conditions, Wildcats managed to clock up two more points securing second spot on the ladder.

One would have thought country counterpart Ballarat Highlanders is use to such country conditions but the air swayed in favour of Wildcats at home as they crunched Ballarat 36-14.

With a massive muster of local support, Wildcats Centre George Moramoro provided the locals their first thrill of the season after receiving an inside ball to score the first try unconverted. Ball security was once again the upset for both teams but Wildcats felt the pinch in the scrums losing three tightheads ten metres from Ballarat’s reach of scoring.

As luck would have it, Wildcats Chris McRae receiving player of the day showed no mercy as he lifted his forward pack to find rookie David McLaughlin waiting in the wing to score his first try. Jared Hiriaki converted giving Wildcats an 8-0 lead.

Ballarat Centre Craig Casey, a past player from Sale Razorbacks, burst through Wildcats defence to score the only try in this half unconverted. Wildcats lead at half time 8-4.

Wildcats came out firing showing gusto and determination only to be shunned aside as Ballarats backline found their form creating room to score out wide from half back Sean O’Meara. In a matter of minutes from the kick-off, hooker Ricki Katu barnstormed through Wildcats forwards to score. Troy Coopers conversion gave Ballarat the lead 14-8.

Wildcats plagued with ball spillage and sloppy scrum feeds stepped up to the plate as State player Jo Csik, hooker Tommy Tangohau & centre George Moramoro sealed the match with Jared Hiriaki converting all three tries, 36-14.

Wildcats would need to step up one more level as they take on top seeded Altona Roosters on Saturday at home, Maryvale Recreation Reserve (West), Henry Street, Morwell at 2:00PM.

Tries scored: George Moramoro (2); David McLaughlin (1); Jo Csik (1), & Tommy Tangohau (1)

Conversions: Jared Hiriaki (5)

Player Awards: Chris McRae, George Moramoro & Tommy Tangohau
