Ingram supports home educators to amend education bill

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, will attempt to amend the Education and Training Reform Bill when it comes before State Parliament this week, to address concerns raised by home educators in Gippsland East.

By Craig Ingram - 27th March 2006 - Back to News

"Home educators have been in discussion with government and Members of Parliament across the state raising issues of concern at the Education and Training Reform Bill," Mr Ingram said.

"The new bill is overhauling 11 current Acts of Parliament, but it’s the inclusion of a narrow definition of home schooling and the concern at the compulsory registration and the impact of yet to be determined regulations that needs to be addressed."

Mr Ingram said that the Bill -- as it has been introduced to Parliament -- needs amendments to address the legitimate concerns of the home educators.

The Parliament needs to ensure that parents who choose to -- and have the capacity to -- educate their children at home are not disadvantaged by the new legislation," Mr Ingram concluded.
