Ingram Welcomes Changes To Gippsland Ports’ Structure

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the State Government’s agreement to implement the move of Gippsland Ports from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to the Department of Infrastructure (DOI).

I have previously made representations to all relevant state ministers and the Premier on the need to shift regional port management structures from DSE across to DOI including a change of responsible ministerial portfolio.

One of the challenges of the current structure is that DSE is essentially focussed on the environmental aspects, while DOI is focused on infrastructure and economic development.

The announcement that this will occur is extremely welcomed and I believe that it is in the best interest for our regional boating infrastructure.

"It is my view that this change should also facilitate a review of all Gippsland Lakes infrastructure including maritime, boating and ports facilities and services, with a view to incorporating all boating tourism and marine infrastructure under the direct authority of Gippsland Ports.

"Currently, Gippsland Ports manages $110 million of infrastructure and is operating under the same organisational and legal structure as many small town recreation reserves or hall committees.

"This appears likely to be addressed as part of the legislative change.

"This change is in the best interest of all boat owners and operators and recognises the important economic development role of a local port authority, providing boating infrastructure for recreational and commercial fishers and boaters," Mr Ingram concluded.

The announcement comes as part of the State Government’s "Ports Futures document" released on Friday. The commitment is to move the responsibilities of local ports across to DOI by July next year.
