Gippsland Logistics Precinct Remains A Viable Proposal

A Request for Proposal process was recently completed for development and operation of Latrobe City Council’s Gippsland Logistics Precinct (GLP).

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that whilst a number of businesses had expressed interest in the site, no proposal from the private sector was received.

"We have recently updated our project plan for the GLP and as a result we will be keeping the Request for Proposal process open for the foreseeable future.

"The sustained interest in Latrobe Valley brown coal presents an opportunity for the site. The RFP will remain open so that Council is in a position to accept proposals from the proponents of coal projects, or any other business wishing to operate the site," Cr Kam said.

The GLP, located south of the railway line and adjacent to the Mid Valley Shopping Centre in Morwell, will be an open access intermodal freight terminal to meet the logistic needs of the Gippsland region.

The site incorporates 64 hectares of prime industrial land (owned by Council) with an existing rail siding and is near to industrial estates, as well as having easy access to the Princes Freeway and the Port of Melbourne.

Cr Kam added that Australian Paper is in discussions with logistics company QUBE re the potential to open up access to Australian Paper’s Maryvale rail siding to allow for the movement of third party freight. This could mean that firms in Gippsland now have the opportunity to move freight via rail, an opportunity local business have not had for many years. Council see this as a positive step toward the export of local products worldwide.

Australian Paper National Logistics Manager, Phillip Porter, said QUBE Logistics recently secured the national freight contract.

"Initial discussions to move third party freight from our Maryvale siding toward the end of 2013 or early 2014 were positive," Mr Porter said.

Charles Stott, Chief Alliance Officer of the Qube Salta Alliance, said Australian Paper’s preparedness to consider opening Maryvale to third party freight is a positive development for the region.

"Rail will provide a new lower cost pathway to the port that is more fuel efficient (reducing Co2 emissions), reliable, safer and decreases the amount of freight on roads. As volumes build the GLP can be developed," Mr Stott said.

Cr Kam said the GLP was an ideal location for local and regional businesses.

"The site will allow businesses to explore the connections with trading partners around the globe. It could potentially open up a world of opportunities for our region," Cr Kam concluded.
