Local Agencies To Work Collaboratively For Emergency Relief

Latrobe City Council is working with the community to ensure that transitional arrangements are in place for families requiring emergency support

By Latrobe City Council - 22nd June 2007 - Back to News

following the announcement that Latrobe Information and Support Centre (LISC) will discontinue its operations from Friday 22 June 2007.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that council is working to develop an integrated emergency relief model that will enhance and co-ordinate services in the region for disadvantaged community members.

"In the lead up to the closure of LISC’s operations at the end of June, council will be working closely with LISC to ensure that any demand for services currently handled by LISC will be met by the network of relief agencies in the area. All agencies have indicated a willingness to work collaboratively and have assured council that no-one will be refused emergency relief should the situation arise," Mr Buckley explained.

"A communication plan developed by Latrobe City, in conjunction with LISC, is currently being rolled out with the aim of making sure that all local agencies are ready and have access to the necessary information and that referral processes are all in place during this transition period.

"We have a strong network of emergency relief providers such as the Latrobe Community Health Service, Salvation Army, Vinnies and Anglicare to name but a few, who have a history of working effectively together to meet the local needs of those in crisis, " Mr Buckley said.

"We acknowledge the invaluable work that LISC has provided over the past 30 years in the local area. We now look forward to working with the Latrobe Emergency Relief Network to develop strategies to help reduce the dependence on emergency relief and to focus on providing a greater level of support to families who are in crisis by developing a more integrated model for this type of service delivery," Mr Buckley concluded.
