East Gippsland Shire Council strengthens the region through Economic Development Strategy

A new strategy to strengthen the region's economy and support existing and emerging industries has been adopted by East Gippsland Shire Council.

In a significant step forward, council's new Economic Development Strategy 2022-32 has been deliberately aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Mayor Cr Mark Reeves said the UN goals were a strong match to the aspirations of East Gippsland's residents. "Through our consultation for the council plan, we know our community members put a high importance on the natural environment. Residents are also concerned about climate change, given how closely linked our lifestyles are to natural attractions."

Meeting community's needs

Cr Reeves said, "Our new 10-year Economic Development Strategy is about more than creating the ability for businesses to flourish, it is about lifting the entire region and bouncing back better than before."

"To ensure this strategy meets the needs of our whole community, both business and industry as well as residents, we used a co-design model. This provided a deep level of engagement and allowed us to broach the concept of ecological economics." Cr Reeves said.

Economic development initiatives

Cr Reeves said,"This innovative approach is about strengthening our whole community and widening the benefits of our economic development initiatives. Council officers engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including groups not ordinarily involved in these conversations."

Cr Reeves said, "The strategy has been built on deep consultation and, going forward, it will be about collaboration and shared ownership as we work to build a more diverse, sustainable and dynamic economy. I would like to thank everyone who contributed their time giving input in this strategy; your efforts have been invaluable in developing this plan for the region's prosperity."

Better and more sustainable future

The 10-year strategy has nine focus areas; they are aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals which are a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

The focus areas are:

• fostering business
• high value and sustainable food and fibre sector
• unique and compelling tourist destination
• economy for young and future generations
• a digital economy
• arts, culture and heritage
• attractive place to live
• climate leaders
• a circular economy

"The Economic Development Strategy is supported by a four-year action plan which focuses on council's investment, planning, facilitation and marketing activities. I look forward to working with all levels of government, stakeholders and industry to continue building a strong and vibrant region," Cr Reeves said.
