Sixteen local vineyards will be part of the trail that meanders through the stunning South Gippsland countryside.

The signed trail will follow the Bass Highway to Wonthaggi and Inverloch, loop to the South Gippsland Highway in Koonwarra and then follow the highway through Leongatha and Korumburra back to the junction of the two highways near Lang Lang.

"South Gippsland now has more than 25 wineries producing a diverse range of wines," said Peter Kozik, President of the Southern Gippsland Wine Inc. "Significant climatic variations provide suitable growing conditions for many different types of grapes."

Peter said that the eastern part of South Gippsland is already producing a Pinot Noir that has achieved recognition for its high quality. The Bass Valley has a similar climate to Bordeaux and the Loire Valley in Europe, which has been acknowledged as the home of some of the finest Pinot Noir in the world.

"We believe that the trail will attract visitors from Melbourne, day-trippers and local people," said Peter.

Wine connoisseurs and visitors will not only enjoy the region’s fine wines, but also the scenic drive and the many other local attractions.

"We also see the wine trail as providing opportunities for restaurants and accommodation providers," said Peter. "We are interested in receiving expressions of interest from these types of businesses so that they can be incorporated into the trail.

"During the next three months we’ll produce a brochure showing the route, listing details of wineries and showcasing restaurants and accommodation along the way," said Peter. "The road signs should start to appear early next year"

The South Gippsland Wines Inc. are receiving business support, including assistance developing a marketing strategy, through the Bass Coast Shire StreetLife Project.

This project "How I stopped worrying and learned to love Bass Coast" is a joint initiative of the Victorian Government StreetLife program and the Bass Coast Shire Council.
