East Gippsland Livestock Exchange Attracting Big Numbers

Buyers from many parts Victoria and even interstate are giving the upgraded East Gippsland Livestock Exchange (Bairnsdale) a big tick, judging by the cattle numbers at this month’s markets.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th March 2004 - Back to News

East Gippsland Shire Council completed Stage Two of the major refurbishment of the saleyards late last year and this has made an immediate impact on farmers’ opinions, as well as making life a lot easier on the cattle.

According to East Gippsland Livestock Exchange Supervisor, Terry Dervusoski, the positive feedback has been overwhelming.

"It’s pleasing to hear farmers - not only locally based - offering positive remarks about how well the refurbished yards are operating," Terry said.

"Some are even commenting that it’s the best selling centre they have attended – that’s a huge compliment to everyone involved in the upgrade.

"What’s impressed many farmers is the cattle looking so comfortable on the soft sawdust floor, one of the major innovations of the new yards.

"Other positive comments relate to the saw tooth roof design, which allows the noise and any aroma to escape, the new National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) scanning, and the general presentation of the yards," he said.

Proof that the upgraded saleyards are number one among cattle producers and buyers is evidenced by numbers at this month’s sales.

"Over 3,600 head were yarded at Tuesday’s Bairnsdale Calf Sale – that’s certainly putting all the new pens to the test and into action," Terry said.

"We’ve also got the Bairnsdale Grown Cattle Sale on Tuesday, 23 March, followed by the Bairnsdale Store Cattle Sale on Tuesday, 30 March – both already attracting big numbers - and in between we’re conducting our regular weekly fat cattle markets, so it’s definitely one of the busiest months of the year.

"Tuesday’s calf sale attracted buyers from all over Victoria as well as New South Wales and South Australia," Terry said.

Stage Two completion of the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange has increased the number of pens to 150.

There are two sets of scales for the fat cattle markets, with multi-read scanners situated at the western exit points of the scales, allowing cattle to be scanned as they come off the scales and proceed into the selling pens.

Along with other changes, upgrades and additions, the complex is now one of the most modern of its kind in Australia and is set to become Gippsland and perhaps regional Victoria’s premier selling centre in the future.

Terry said the cattle aren’t the only ones at the saleyards who appreciate the soft floor.

"All those that work in the saleyards complex have also taken a liking to the soft floor, as previously it was a concrete floor which became very hard on our feet," he said.

"I call the yards the ‘Comfort Inn for Cattle’ – clean pens, fresh water, relaxed surroundings and professional staff – what more could they want!"
