Gippsland Lakes black bream stocks in crisis: Ingram

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has described the ongoing situation with the Gippsland Lakes black bream stocks as "a crisis".

By Craig Ingram - 21st October 2004 - Back to News

"At the fisheries stock assessment forum on the weekend, representatives from the commercial, recreational and tourism industries were presented with the fisheries research indicators on the health of black bream stocks and the data paints a bleak picture," Mr Ingram said.

"Both recreational and commercial catch rates remain at a 30 - 40 year low.

"Commercial catch rates are extremely low at between 28 - 30 tonnes in the past two years, down from the 215 tonne average since 1980.

"Absences of any strong year classes mean that catches are unlikely to improve in the near future.

"The viability of the Gippsland black bream fishery continues to be a major concern considering the importance of the bream fishery to our region’s economy.

"It is clear that factors outside the control of fisheries managers - mainly the environmental conditions of our lakes and rivers - are the most dominate impact on determining the ongoing viability of the black bream.

"State and Federal Governments have finally recognised the extent of the environmental problems facing the Gippsland Lakes.

"I congratulate both levels of government for their recent commitments towards nutrient reduction, irrigation efficiency and environmental flow all designed to achieve a healthier Gippsland Lakes.

Mr Ingram said the East Gippsland community must all work together to find acceptable solutions to ensure the viability of black bream.
