Help to keep public places free of dog mess

Wellington Shire Council is reminding dog owners to do the neighbourly thing by ensuring streets, parks and beaches are kept free of dog mess.

By Wellington Shire Council - 6th October 2003 - Back to News

Around 900,000 dogs in Victoria produce 90 tonnes of dog mess each day. It is smelly, unsightly and very unpleasant to step in, as well as a potential health hazard to humans because of harmful bacteria and organisms that it might contain.

Cleaning up after dogs is part of being a responsible pet owner. This means removing any mess from public places, using a bag or a scoop, and disposing of it conscientiously in either a council-provided dog litter bin, at a domestic landfill, at waste collection time or in a composting bin.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Leaving dog mess in a public place such as a park, a street, or on a beach is anti-social and a health issue. We appreciate that the vast majority of Wellington’s dog owners are already very conscientious when it comes to cleaning up after their pets. We would urge the small minority who aren’t complying to please take on board their responsibility to the local community and remove and dispose of dog mess properly."

Anyone who would like more information on responsible dog ownership can contact Wellington Shire Council’s Local Laws Officers on 1300 366 244. Alternatively visit the Council’s website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au or the site www.pets.info.vic.gov.au

As a last resort Wellington can fine irresponsible dog owners $100 for failing to clear up after their pet.
