Gippsland Art Gallery Views Its Audience

Investigating the art of providing something of interest for everyone

By Karen Gregory - 26th June 2002 - Back to News

Gippsland Art Gallery is about to investigate the art of providing something of interest for everyone.

Over the next few weeks, the gallery will be taking a good look at its current audience strategy.

Gallery staff will be undertaking market research in three distinct areas to determine how the gallery can play a wider role in people’s lives, not only for visitors to Wellington, but also for school students and residents across the Shire.

"The market research will be carried out over a four week period from end of June-July," said Curator Maxine Holden.

"While surveys have been carried out in the past, this particular research takes a different approach and is intended to form the basis for a fresh direction for the gallery."

To be undertaken in three distinct areas, the research will involve:

1. A front of house visitor survey. Visitors will be asked to provide feedback on their impressions of the gallery.

2. Personally invited in-depth interviews. Key contacts who use the gallery regularly (e.g. school teachers and tourism operators) will be asked for their impressions, hopes and aspirations for the growth and development of the gallery in the Shire.

3. A visit to several schools. Gallery staff will ask students what they know about the Gallery and its collection, and what they hope their gallery can offer them in the future.

"There’s a strong body of evidence that suggests the arts play a significant role in the welfare, education and health of society. Art can broaden people’s knowledge base and contribute to a wider acceptance of cultural diversity," said Maxine.

"Given these important indications, it becomes apparent that Gippsland Art Gallery performs a vital function for this Shire and it’s imperative that we determine exactly how we help our gallery grow to meet the needs of our community."
