Gippsland Incident Control Centre Update - Sunday

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has organised six information sessions for livestock owners in flood affected areas.

DPI Incident Controller, Paul Beltz, said even though we are still experiencing rain, now is the time for farmers to start planning for the future weeks.

"We still have a lot of winter to go and need to look forward as to where we can go to from here."

Topics to be covered in the information sessions will be animal health issues, feeding livestock, managing wet feed, stock containment areas, drainage, the effect of flood waters on pasture and pasture recovery.

The information sessions will be held at the following locations and will run for approximately 2 hours.

Wed 11/07/07 1.00pm Airly Hall, Clydebank Road

Wed 11/07/07 6.30pm Tinamba Tavern

Thu 12/07/07 1.00pm Newry Hall

Thu 12/07/07 6.30pm Stratford, Uniting Church Hall

Fri 13/07/07 1.00pm Cowwarr Hall

Tue 17/07/07 1.00pm Boisdale Football Clubrooms

Staff at the Incident Control Centre have been assisting landholders with the assessment of the impact of recent heavy rains and flooding. To date there have been reports from 1,132 landholders, with damage reported to 23,907 hectares.

Numbers of lost or missing stock to date are:

Beef cattle 1,148

Dairy cattle 159

Sheep 1,688

Horses 4

Goats 12

Poultry 38

To date 1,662 tonnes of hay has been lost and 2,641 tonnes of grain.

Affected Gippsland landholders are advised to contact the Maffra DPI Incident Control Centre on 1800 729 834 to register their details. The call centre is open between 8am and 6pm.
