Community Tourism Reference Group launchedPassionate community members and representatives came together on Monday, 27 March 2017 for the first Community Tourism Reference Group meeting. By Portal Admin - 30th March 2017 - Back to News The group was formed as one of the high priority actions determined by the recently developed Phillip Island and San Remo Visitor Economy Strategy 2035: Growing Tourism.
The Strategy was prepared to help ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism sector in Phillip Island and San Remo.
The Chair of the Group, Cr Michael Whelan, said the Strategy recognises the importance of both the community and the natural environment in achieving this outcome.
"The delivery of a world leading destination experience, along with management of an important eco-system and tourism destination such as Phillip Island and San Remo, requires a network of partners working towards a common goal," Cr Whelan said.
"The Group will ensure an open and productive relationship between Bass Coast Shire Council, the tourism sector and the community."
The Group will assist Council and its partners with the implementation of the Strategy in relation to:
Coordination of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria certification process for Phillip Island and San Remo
Preservation of beaches and natural beauty
Prevention of deterioration of foreshores
Maintenance of wildlife reserves
Improvement of facilities that would lead to the better enjoyment of the Island by the community and visitors
Members of the Group will act as advocates for priorities of the Strategy, and increase networking and collaboration between key stakeholders in the tourism sector and the community.
The Group is made up of community representatives nominated through an Expression of Interest process, representatives from Council, Destination Phillip Island, Phillip Island Conservation Society, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Phillip Island Tourism and Business Association, San Remo District Traders Association and San Remo Foreshore Committee.
