Weeds for Trees

Wellington Shire Council is keen to hear from rural landholders plagued by infestations of roadside weeds next to their properties, as they may qualify for free herbicides and other help to tackle the problem.

By Wellington Shire Council - 13th October 2003 - Back to News

Application forms for assistance under the Weeds for Trees initiative - coordinated jointly by the Council, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Landcare – are currently being sent to all rural landholders in the Shire. Also attached is an informative, full colour weed identification guide.

Those who would like help have until 24 October to apply for assistance and if they qualify will shortly after receive a supply of herbicides for approved weed control. In addition Landcare will be providing indigenous plants to help revegetate suitable roadsides and to promote biodiversity.

The scheme has been operating for two years, with some 650 kilometres sprayed and cleared of weed infestations.

Meanwhile to mark Weedbuster Week (12-19 October) the Council, DPI and Landcare will be running a weed information display at three locations across the Shire. The dates and locations are:

  • 12-19 October Old Library/Community HouseYarram (9.30am-4pm)
  • 16-17 October Gippsland Centre, Sale (9am-5pm)
  • 20-24 October The foyer, Wellington Shire Council offices, Sale (8.30am-5.30pm)

Those who turn up to the Gippsland Centre display with a small bag of weeds will be able to swap it for a free native tree or shrub (while stocks last).

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "As a Shire we are committed to looking after our natural resources, including our bushlands, which means doing whatever we can to address the menace of weeds. We are keen to help rural landholders where we can under the Weeds for Trees initiative and would also encourage anyone who would like to know more about weeds and getting rid of them to pop along to one of the information displays being held over the next week or so."
