Fox Control in Gippsland

Landholders in Gippsland are being encouraged to come together to help tackle the fox problem.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 28th August 2003 - Back to News

After running for 12 months and proving largely ineffective in reducing fox populations, the Fox Bounty trial has ended and communities across the State are being encouraged to get involved in targeted baiting programs.

A number of landholders have already had remarkable success with targeted baiting:

The Baird family at Dutson near Sale said that they are pleased with the results of their targeted baiting program.

"We've found the baiting program very successful in reducing fox numbers," Darryl Baird said.

"We think it has significantly improved our lambing percentages this year."

DSE is encouraging public land managers to put an emphasis on baiting, particularly in areas bordering on priority livestock enterprises, but it needs the cooperation of all landholders.

Landholders wanting Fox-Off baits can contact their local DSE/DPI depot and make an appointment.

The best way to get involved is to contact your nearest Fox Control Coordinator.

The Fox Control Coordinator in Gippsland is Ian Brown at the Yarram DSE/DPI office on 51 839100.

Fox Control Coordinators can also help you organise the appropriate chemicals handling accreditation, as well as advising on the best techniques for effective baiting.

Otherwise you can call the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
