Research Shows Spending Dollars Locally This Christmas Will Matter

Latrobe City Council chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, has said that a recent Latrobe City employment and industry survey has reinforced the significance of the retail sector in the Gippsland region.

By Latrobe City - 24th December 2008 - Back to News

The survey conducted in April 2008 shows that the retail trade sector has the largest number of employees in the Latrobe Valley.

"This is particularly important in light of the Federal Government’s stimulus package and where the community chooses to do its Christmas shopping.

"Christmas is an important time for many retailers and it makes good sense for residents to spend their bonus in local retail stores.

"There are 5,441 people employed in the retail trade sector and the continued viability and health of this employment market is very much dependant upon the success of the traditional Christmas shopping period," Mr Buckley said.

"Many people will be urging residents to shop local this year, and it’s a message worth reinforcing in light of these survey results."

Mr Buckley said that while the traditional employment reputation of the Latrobe Valley is one where employment is dominated by the power industry, this is changing. Mr Buckley added that the employment contribution of almost 7000 jobs from the mining and electricity, gas, and water services combined with manufacturing and construction sectors still underpins the local economy.

"The Latrobe Valley’s top three employment sectors are retail and trade employing 17% of the total employment sector, education and training at 12% and health care and social assistance at 11%.

"Supporting, developing and providing a strong environment where small business can continue to flourish and grow is obviously important to the future health and prosperity of the Latrobe Valley," Mr Buckley said.

"Small retailers are the backbone of the Valley’s commercial sector and any support that can be given to them during this time of the year will be significant."
