Fires In Gippsland

The highest priority on the major fire 10 kilometres north of Moe is asset protection, particularly as increasing temperatures and winds are likely to cause erratic fire behaviour.

By Department of Sustainability & Environment - 23rd January 2006 - Back to News

Incident Controller Dennis Matthews said that the successful overnight backburn is helping to hold it on the south eastern sector.

"We are planning further backburning operations east of Tyers River near the Moe-Walhalla Road within the next two to three hours, so there will be an increase in smoke in that area later today."

There are currently no communities under immediate threat from this fire.

The fire 30 kilometres north west of Heyfield on Black Range is proving difficult for DSE ground crews to work on in steep country, with burning stags from an old logging coupe causing problems.

The fire is still at five hectares.

All other fires in the region are under control.
