Joint Effort Continues On Lakes’ Sand Issues

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, and representatives from Gippsland Ports met with the Minister for Environment, John Thwaites, at Parliament House to discuss sand management and funding issues of the Lakes Entrance bar

Gippsland Ports’ chairman, Bruce Warr and CEO, Geoff Kohlman, met with the Minister and put forward Gippsland Ports’ funding case to replace its aging dredging fleet and trials for the sand by-pass system on the ocean entrance.

"This is just part of a joint effort by Gippsland Ports and I to ensure the issues at Lakes Entrance are recognised and addressed by government," Mr Ingram said today.

"Maintaining a safe and navigable ocean entrance is essential for the region’s economy -- both for the commercial fishing and the recreational boating community.

"The decisions that government and Gippsland Ports make on replacing the April Hamer and the recently decommissioned Sandpiper will have a significant, long-term impact on Gippsland Ports’ operating cost and the effectiveness of sand management at Lakes Entrance.

"Gippsland Ports received a good hearing and I believe that the Minister is now better placed to understand the difficulties that both Gippsland Ports and local boating operators are facing.

"Unless sufficient funding is provided by the State Government, the long term future of the port at Lakes Entrance and the Gippsland Lakes will be under severe pressure," Mr Ingram concluded.
