Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester "There's been an incredible transformation under way at Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve over the past few years, primarily due to the previous federal Ggovernment and the hard work of local volunteers. By working together, we've been able to secure funding for a range of major improvements to football, netball and cricket facilities but the newest addition adds to the holiday appeal of the popular caravan and camping location."

Ensuring fir-for-purpose facility

Mr Chester said, "A new toilet and shower block was in operation this summer thanks to a $442,000 bushfire recovery co-funded project at the reserve, designed and built by local tradies."

"Along with being an important part of the visitor economy, the reserve is a gathering place for the community and is the town's major sporting venue. It also needs to have appropriate facilities to ensure it is fit-for-purpose if required to accommodate families in an emergency situation." Mr Chester said.

Delivering better service

Mr Chester said the reserve had not received the necessary capital funding for improvements in the past and he paid credit to the volunteers for working hard to source grants.

"Over the past few years, local volunteers have worked with my office and state MP Tim Bull to secure funding from all levels of government for new changerooms, improve netball courts and this new toilet and shower block. These upgrades are a testament to the dedication of local volunteers who ensure the recreation reserve can service the many needs of the community."

"The majority of the funding has come from the federal government but most of the credit should go to the volunteers who are the mainstays of the reserve and sporting clubs in the town. There's always more funding required for further upgrades and I'm committed to helping the volunteers keep developing this vital piece of community infrastructure," he said.
