Creative Gippsland brochures launched

A suite of Creative Gippsland Cultural Tourism brochures was launched by Federal Minister for Gippsland, the Federal Minister for Science The Hon Peter McGauran, at the Affordable Art Show at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton last week..

By Latrobe Shire Council - 20th April 2004 - Back to News

The brochures showcase and celebrate Gippsland’s artists, galleries, studios, public art sites, performing arts venues, and heritage and tourism destinations, and have been developed to generate visitor interest in the arts both inside and outside of the region.

Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, said individual brochures for each Gippsland municipality had been designed with the common ‘Creative Gippsland’ branding. "These brochures also place a focus on particular restaurants, cafes, wineries and accommodation places that support and promote the arts," Ms Raven explained.

"Participants in the Creative Gippsland brochure for Latrobe City include all of the major facilities such as the Latrobe Regional Gallery, ARC Yinnar, Switchback Gallery at Monash, Gippsland Heritage Park, Powerworks, and Traralgon and District Arts Society. It also includes established, new and emerging artists such as Alby’s Designer glass, the Faith and Fabric Art group and Yakuna Dreaming Indigenous art," Ms Raven said.

Recognising that a vibrant and active cultural community makes for an attractive environment for investors and families alike, Mr McGauran made particular note of the economic and social benefits the suite of brochures would have for Gippsland.

The minister acknowledged the importance of local government initiatives in this field and the role that both state and federal governments need to take in supporting initiatives such as this.

Latrobe City’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said Creative Gippsland was an award winning initiative of six Gippsland municipalities.

"This initiative has resulted in the tourism and arts and culture sectors working cooperatively across local government boundaries to foster regional development and promote Gippsland to new visitors.

"Such cooperation can only result in increased visitor numbers for the entire region as tourists discover for themselves the wealth of artistic talent and cultural opportunities that can be enjoyed on a visit to Gippsland," Cr Price said.

Brochures are now available from all major tourism centres including the Latrobe Visitor Information Centre in Traralgon.

The Creative Gippsland network is supported by Arts Victoria, DOTARS (Department of Transport and Regional Sustainability), Latrobe City, and the shires of Bass Coast, Baw Baw, East Gippsland, South Gippsland and Wellington.

A joint launch of the Latrobe City and Baw Baw Shire brochures will be held in Gippsland at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell in early May. Interested persons can contact Lynette Raven, Arts Innovation Facilitator at Latrobe City for further information ion, telephone 5128 5639.
