Feral animal control announcement welcomed

Gippsland East MP, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the decision by the State Government to allow accredited sporting shooters to assist with the control of feral animals in National Parks.

"I congratulate the government for responding to my calls in Parliament on October 16, 2003 where I outlined the problem and called on the Minister for Environment to use the skills and knowledge of the SSAA to assist with parks management," Mr Ingram said.

"This initiative will add significantly to the ability of Parks Victoria to manage pest animals, as long as Parks Victoria and the DSE continue its current programs.

"A recent visit to the Alpine National Park, near Benambra, highlighted the damage that feral pigs can do if allowed to infest national parks. Along with feral goats, wild dogs, cats and deer they are significantly reducing the ecology of our parks.

"This program should be seen as complementary, rather than a replacement of the government’s obligations to adequately resource pest management responsibility in national parks.

"It will allow the government to achieve more with the limited resources committed to parks management," Mr Ingram concluded.
