Defence Sector Prospects for Latrobe City

Business delegation led to Latrobe City Council showcasing the specialist business and industry expertise available in Latrobe City connected to the defence sector.

A business delegation to the ‘Pacific 2019: International Maritime Exposition’ has led to Latrobe City Council showcasing the specialist business and industry expertise available in Latrobe City connected to the defence sector.

The three day trade event, held in early October, enabled Latrobe City Council to raise the profile of local businesses and the capability of the regions workforce to over 21,000 trade visitors highlighting that Gippsland’s regional city is well positioned to service the emerging defence industry.

Drawing on the theme that the Latrobe City is open for business, stakeholders presented to Parliamentary Secretary for Jobs, Jane Garrett who visited the region last Wednesday.

Speaking after last week’s round table session, Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Dan Clancey said that Ms Garrett’s visit to the region provided Council with a further opportunity to advocate on behalf of local industry and importantly was an initiative that was borne from the Pacific 2019 exposition.

"We advocate heavily on local industry’s behalf to state and federal government on the immense capability and opportunity we have in Latrobe City. By attending Pacific 2019, Council officers were able to showcase to industry, government and defence professionals the capabilities that we have right here on our doorstep.

"We have the business knowledge, understanding and most importantly the skilled workforce capable of supplying project based design, engineering, manufacturing and maintenance for these major defence projects.

"To be able to have Ms Garrett hear firsthand how Latrobe City can play an important role in this space is incredibly valuable as we advocate to best position the region as a player in the supply of defence-specific or dual-use goods."

Following the Pacific 2019 exposition, Latrobe City has partnered with Rheinmetall Defence Australia to host an industry briefing on supply chain opportunities for LAND400 Phase 2. The Australian Army has contracted Rheinmetall to deliver a minimum of 211 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles valued at $3.334 billion over the next nine years.
