Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the Policy and Committee structure were developed in conjunction with key event organisers.

"The Special Events Policy has been developed to clarify Council’s role and level of support for events, to outline event requirements for event organisers and to form a the blueprint for a sustainable, well spread annual events program.

"The structure of the new Major Events Planning Committee has recommended the inclusion of community members from across all parts of the Shire and key stakeholders on an event-by-event basis," said Mr Angarane.

Council’s Special Events Policy:

  • Formalises and streamlines the existing procedures for the granting of event permits;
  • Defines which events will need to apply for a permit and sets out the processes for permit application and staging of an event;
  • Includes kits to assist event organisers in successfully planning and managing events;
  • Confirms its commitment to the support of community based events;
  • Confirms its commitment to attract new events to establish a sustainable, diverse and well-spread events calendar which will bring significant economic benefits and help people celebrate and enjoy living in and visiting Bass Coast; and
  • Confirms a commitment to attract film activities and tap into the lucrative conferences and conventions market.

Mr Angarane said that although many of the processes established by the Policy had been taking place for a number of years, they had not been formally sanctioned by Council.

He went on to say that the previous event committee was due for reform as its two year term had expired.

"It was recognised by Council, key event organisers and emergency services groups that there was a need to include more event organisers and representatives from the communities impacted by the events in the planning process.

"The previous Event Support and Community Liaison Committee members who attended the final meeting, overwhelmingly endorsed both the policy and the new committee structure.

"I want thank the previous Committee for their invaluable contribution over the past two years and I look forward to further progress being made by the new Committee," concluded Mr Angarane.
