Redevelopment plans for Lex Glover Swimming Complex move forward apace

Wellington Shire Council last night approved concept plans for a much needed $6 million revamp of the ageing Lex Glover Regional Swimming Complex, and is now applying to State Government for funding support under its Better Pools Program.

When the swimming complex opened in 1972 it was the trend setter - the State’s first indoor heated pool outside of Melbourne. However, some 30 years on many of its facilities are in much need of upgrading, so that Wellington can meet the requirements of present day and future users from across the shire, with many having greater expectations about the services a complex like this should provide.

The aim is to transform it into a top class regional facility appropriate to a prosperous forward-looking Shire like Wellington, which can also boast a number of other exciting multi-million-dollar building projects such as the recently completed Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre and the start of the Port of Sale redevelopment. All are set to benefit the Wellington community and Gippsland region as a whole.

Last night’s Council Meeting decision takes on board many of the findings of a steering committee set up earlier in the year to gather extensive community feedback on the initiative. The budget for the proposed revamp has been increased from a little over $4 million to nearly $6 million to incorporate a number of facilities requested by the community, with $2.5 million funding to be sought from the State Government’s Better Pools Program.

The Council’s proposed revamp includes installing:

  • new showers and changing room facilities;
  • new toilets near the entrance to the complex;
  • a hydrotherapy/program pool;
  • a learn to swim and beach entry toddlers pool;
  • new entry and foyer area;
  • a new gym, aerobics and cardiofitness area;
  • crèche.

The Council will be lodging its application for State funding by 10 December, with a decision expected in May 2004. It is hoped to start work on site in January 2005, with completion expected within 12 months. The revamp plans allow for the possible replacement of the present six lane pool with an eight lane pool in the longer term.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "The Lex-Glover Swimming Complex is well overdue for a much-needed upgrade to turn it into a top class facility and we are anxious to progress with the proposed extensive revamp as quickly as possible.

"This is a very worthwhile investment in helping to preserve and enhance the future wellbeing of our community. We are talking about Lex-Glover once again becoming the great facility that the community of Wellington deserves, representing a great asset to the Shire and Gippsland."

Steering committee Chair Dr Chris Fielding added: "We see this as marking a new beginning for the Lex Glover Complex and very much welcome the progress that’s been made in driving this ahead. We look forward to the completion of the project in its entirety, with a new state-of-the-art eight lane pool."
