Monash University helps businesses throughout Gippsland via the Technology Transfer Gateway

Many Gippsland businesses have been getting help from the technology experts from the Monash University’s Gippsland Campus.

Many Small to Medium Enterprises (SME's) in Gippsland face challenges and issues in adopting and applying new technologies. The Technology Transfer Gateway (TTG) provides business owners and operators with practical assistance to help them chose and apply the right technology to improve their business.

Basically the Gateway is the way businesses can access expertise from Monash University. To find out more about the project, visit www.mrcict.monash.edu.au

The Technology Transfer Gateway pilot project has recently had several enquiries from businesses seeking advice on an e‑marketing strategy.

Dr Samir Gupta and Assoc. Professor Chris Dubelaar from the Department of Marketing, were commissioned by the TTG to put together some broad e-marketing strategies for two very different companies:

  • Brigadoon Bed & Breakfast - a well established company wanting to increase more stays from guests with families, and
  • Scale Reproductions - a new start-up venture which will custom make high quality scaled reproduction models of cars, buildings and planes for enthusiasts.

We are able to share some of the more generic advice the academics gave to these businesses:

Q: How do I increase the number of HITS to my web site?
A: Getting extra "hits" is, is itself, not the point. Instead, it is getting relevant hits.

Hits are a false measure of web site performance - it is only a record that a "file" was requested from a web page. So if a web page contains 3 files, every time the web page is visited it records 3 hits.

Unique visitors, measured over a period of time and in conjunction with the length of time the visitor stays on the web, compared to actual customers is the most accurate measure.

Q: How do you get "higher" up the search engine ranks?
A: Get more websites pointing at you, and use the appropriate keywords effectively in the design of your site.

Some businesses have done a lot of work arranging to have links on other web sites pointing at theirs, but when have you done enough? Well, that depends on how high you rank in the search engines. If you are not in the first few pages you still have lots of work to do.

The visitors that you want at your web site are the ones who will buy the products and services that you offer. A major focus of both of the studies was customised advice on "brand building" - how to make you business name more well known and remembered by customers. Traditional marketing channels are also a key part of this strategy.
