Council backs Howard visit outcomes

Wellington Shire Council took this week’s visit from Australian Prime Minister, John Howard as an opportunity to pursue several projects that will bring substantial benefits to local defence, timber and irrigation industries.

The Prime Minister’s welcome tour of the shire brought several key developments including confirmation that the council’s concerted lobbying efforts to secure the future of East Sale RAAF Base in Wellington have been successful - with Mr Howard’s tour of the base being taken to affirm the government’s commitment to the facility’s expansion which is set to inject a significant, long-term economic boost into the local community.

The visit illustrated the government’s appreciation and acknowledgement of Wellington’s vital agricultural industries, and the importance of sustaining these to remain competitive in Australian and international marketplaces. Mr Howard met with key representatives from irrigation and timber operations, including an inspection of the locally owned and operated Neville Smith Timber Industries mill in Heyfield to discuss its future strategic direction.

Monday’s tour also saw the council seize the opportunity to seek support for an application lodged for an additional $480,000 funding from the Federal Government’s Regional Partnerships Program for Rosedale’s new $2.4 million, multi-purpose community centre, due for development later this year. The requested financial support will add to the existing tally for the project that includes the recently announced $250,000 from the State Government and a $765,000 contribution from the council.

Said Wellington Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Wellington Shire, the Heart of Gippsland is strategically one of the most important areas in Australia, whether in relation to Defence, food production, natural resources, water, forestry or tourism. Accordingly, it is most appropriate that the Prime Minister and other Federal Ministers appear to be placing the area on their programs for regular visits."

"The most important aspect of the visit we believe is the demonstrated commitment to the RAAF base in East Sale. When the Leader of the Federal Opposition visits next week we will seek a similar commitment from him should a Labor Government be elected in the future."
