Old Fisheries Building Set For Demolition

Bass Coast Shire Council has applied for planning permits to demolish the old Fisheries Building at 98 Chapel Street, Cowes.

By Bass Coast - 6th October 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said the building was in a poor state of repair.

"Council considered a number of options in deciding the future of the building," said Ms Wenn.

"After much discussion, Council agreed that demolition was the most sensible option given the building’s poor structural integrity."

The building was formerly used by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and has been empty since DSE left the building in 2000.

"The Government identified that they no longer needed this land and building but agreed with Council that the land should stay in public ownership," said Ms Wenn.

"After the demolition, Council will maintain the block which will be reserved for community use."

Demolition is expected to take two weeks and is scheduled to commence on 25 October 2010.

There will be some minor inconvenience for pedestrians as the footpath will be closed off at certain times during the day.

Nearby landowners will be personally notified before the works start.
